Included with the letter was an article from the San Jose Mercury News titled "12 Cops, 40 Others Sight Weird 'Saucers'". Dr. Carl. D. Duncan (1895-1966), former SJSU professor and chairman of the National Science Department, began his career at San Jose State College in 1922. During his tenure he mentored many students, and between the years 1964-1966, he mentored Patricia Carpio (Whiting), a student in the Humanities & Art. Whiting worked for Dr. Duncan, who served as the secretary of the Field Studies program at that time. Whiting went on to become the first Filipino woman elected to the Oregon State Legislature, serving three terms from 1972-1978, and a community activist and beloved leader. Duncan and Whiting maintained a long-term friendship that lasted until his death in 1966. Patricia Whiting died at age 69 on July 1, 2010 of cancer. She is survived by her husband Vincent Whiting.
Mom finally asked if she could borrow my car. The answer is - yes - but I’ll have to have hers to drive in the meanwhile. Dearest Patricia: You don’t know how overjoyed I was at your stopping by for a brief “Hello” this evening. It brought me happiness enough to alst the rest of the week! I could hardly believe my ears when I heard your bicycle horn, but I knew the sound could come from nothing else. I had several things stored up to tell you when I next saw you, but I forgot all about them when I saw you. I did tell you at the start of Bucky Fuller’s workshop that I took Connie a cheese cake. But then the program began and there wasn’t time to tell you anything else. I intended to say that Connie seems to be going through her mumps (if that’s what she has) quite rapidly. The swelling has half gone down already so your mom is ready to doubt if it is mumps though she has other symptoms - no desire to eat anything sour or acidic, though she luikes citrus fruits and juices, etc. your mom doesn’t remember that you ever had the mumps - in fact she thinks you didn’t. Connie also said she thought she had had them too - when she was in Junior High, but mom says no! anyway, Connie is getting better and the boys seem to have no further signs. The little ones were full of activity and busy as bees in the garden - so they don’t have any mumps yet. I got a call today from the St. Claire Travel Service to the effect that our tickets to Palm Springs had arrived so I’ll pick them up tomorrow. Even though I phoned the numbers given for San Jose, I got the San Francisco office of Western Airlines, so I asked to have tickecs sent to the St. Claire Travel Service. I don’t understand B. Fuller. As brilliant a man as he quite obviously is, it seems to me should have known he couldn’t cover as many ideas on math, etc. and expect a general audience to absorb it at the rate he want today. What he did later that was interest was to show pictures of nearly ebvery place his geodesic dome has been explained and used in N. and S. America, Europe, and Africa. He must habe shown 20 or more different domes of different sizes. He says he has calculated what it would take to build one a mile across and he asserts it would stand up as well as the small ones. He showe4d them on Mt. Washington in New Hampshire where one withstood winds up to 300 miles an hour with no damage - also that the U.S. “dew line” of defense structures across Alaska and Canada uses many of them - etc. all this was interesting even though it was largely publicizing B. Fuller, you’d have found that part of his workshop followable and interesting - but so far as understanding all the theory he presented - a lot of people were just shaking their heads clear up to his final words. Well, this is more than I intended to write. Thanks, again for coming by and I’ll see you tomorrow - at six - unless you revise the time schedule. Hope you can relax completely at dinner after your exam. Love - Carl.
