WAVES OF REVOLUTION AN UNDERGROUND FILM WAVES OF REVOLUTION directed by Anand Patwardhan, is a 1/2 hour, underground film recently smuggled out of the dictatorial state of India. It depicts the 1974-75 struggle of the people of Bihar who, under the leadership of students and the Gandhian Socialist, Jayaprakash Narayan, began to revolt against the corruption of the over-centralized governement bureaucracy, the ruling elite and the landed classes. Through militant non-violent actions, the Bihar Movement challengend the existing power structure and attempted to establish grassroots democracy in its place. Since June 1975, after the declaration of Emergency, thousands of Movement supporters have been jailed and the rest have been forced underground. ANAND PATWARDHAN who worked in the Bihar Movement, will initiate discussions on the successes and failures of the Movement, and the present role of Indians abroad and the international community in fighting dictatorship in India.
