This publication was followed by The Class Paper in 1880, The Normal Index in 1885, and The Normal Pennant in 1898. Published from 1898-1909, the pages of The Normal Pennant provided the campus population with a monthly publication that included humorous literary tales, serious reports on teacher training on campus and across the state, book reviews, poems, lyrics, updates on clubs and societies, campus activities, jokes, and advertisements from local businesses. Each volume is beautifully illustrated with woodcut designs, photographs, and line drawings created by the student body. The Digital Collection: The Normal Pennant Collection consist of 42 volumes produced from 1898 to 1909, which provide print and visual documentation of student life during the early years of the San Jose State Normal School. The Physical Collection: The Normal Pennant is part of San Jose State University Student Publications Collection, which consists of student publications dating from 1880 to 2004 (bulk 1960-1990). The print collection consists of student-created guides, magazines, newsletters, newspapers, pamphlets, and yearbooks.
