The newly built, earthquake-resistant buildings at the Olive View Hospital in Sylmar were destroyed during the 1971 earthquake. Four five-story wings pulled away from the main building and three stair towers toppled. The three collapsed units were individual monoliths and were supported on columns through the basement, the fourth unit was built on ground, not supported by columns, the collapse of carport and first floors was also due to failure of columns.
