And the reception of this little book will be different from what the author may have anticipated. Its publisher has told me that Mr Steinbeck wrote it 'as an experiment'; that he did not even insist on its publication. 'Don't publish it if you don't like it," he wrote, and didn't even wish to see proofs of it. I can understand that: a writer who has put on paper something so deeply moving whishes for a while not to think of it again.
