According to Mr Hemp, John Steinbeck thought that Ellwood Graham's commissioned portrait of him was so bad that he made him do it over again. This gave Mrs Deim, who was concurrently doing a non-commissioned portrait of Steinbeck (and who was Mr Graham's wife), plenty of time to paint details, such as how he held his pencil. Mrs Deim had brought the portrait to Mr Hemp to have it reproduced as a limited run, signed poster.
