Dr. Carl. D. Duncan (1895-1966), former SJSU professor and chairman of the National Science Department, began his career at San Jose State College in 1922. During his tenure he mentored many students, and between the years 1964-1966, he mentored Patricia Carpio (Whiting), a student in the Humanities & Art. Whiting worked for Dr. Duncan, who served as the secretary of the Field Studies program at that time. Whiting went on to become the first Filipino woman elected to the Oregon State Legislature, serving three terms from 1972-1978, and a community activist and beloved leader. Duncan and Whiting maintained a long-term friendship that lasted until his death in 1966. Patricia Whiting died at age 69 on July 1, 2010 of cancer. She is survived by her husband Vincent Whiting.
Dearest Patricia: I have decided not to return to Palo Alto and Las Lomitas School today because I have been asked to be present at the Tree Lighting Ceremony on 7th street this afternoon and then to have dinner with a group of Department heads and others with Dean Gunderson of Engineering the host. So I think I will join them. Will you, therefore, as I will be home from noon on (or perhaps 1:00 if I should be delayed in getting back from campus), phone me as early in the afternoon as you can so that I can relay a message to Dr. Edmiston of Palo Alto and hold the 6:45 time tomorrow for him to see you and have an initial talk with you? You can decide after this consultation or on the basis of it whether you wish to go on and see him on later occasions. But I have a song feeling that he can provide additional help for you and perhaps help you a very great deal. Since he is now closed as an M.D. there would be no question whatever about the insurance angle. He has helped others whose charges were paid by insurance companies with no question whatever. --Carl
