Dr. Carl. D. Duncan (1895-1966), former SJSU professor and chairman of the National Science Department, began his career at San Jose State College in 1922. During his tenure he mentored many students, and between the years 1964-1966, he mentored Patricia Carpio (Whiting), a student in the Humanities & Art. Whiting worked for Dr. Duncan, who served as the secretary of the Field Studies program at that time. Whiting went on to become the first Filipino woman elected to the Oregon State Legislature, serving three terms from 1972-1978, and a community activist and beloved leader. Duncan and Whiting maintained a long-term friendship that lasted until his death in 1966. Patricia Whiting died at age 69 on July 1, 2010 of cancer. She is survived by her husband Vincent Whiting.
Had a most enjoyable evening at the Walkers. Dearest Patricia: Your comments re: Miguel Aleman’s guitar playing this afternoon gave me quite a lift. Since I have had so little formal music training (none at all in college) I have always been hesitant about giving out with my reactions to a performance such as Aleman’s. That he showed great skill in fingering and in the use of both hands in developing his musical patterns was quite apparent and I much enjoyed seeing and hearing him play. However, I noticed all three of the aspects of his flamenco playing that you mentioned as shortcomings and was somewhat disturbed by them but I thought “well maybe they were intentional and belonged with flamenco music”. Had you told me this was the case I would have accepted it without question. But to have you list them as shortcomings was very reassuring to me. It made me feel that perhaps I have more musical judgment than I’ve given myself credit for. This is one more thing I learn from you. I admire your judgment and your “speaking out” whenever you know something. Also my admiration is yours on the way you stick to your studies when you have a job to accomplish. Your typing several hours over the weekend made quite an impression on Leon, too - and your insistence on his studying too. This he repeated to your mom. The result is improved study habits on his part and this is good. He has a lot of potential and an older sister who can set him an example of stability and “stick-to-it-iveness” is very wholesome. He looks to you for inspiration and guidance. This evening I found your mom with a much improved foot and in good spirits. Thought you’d like to know I took her a box of bandaids and a blanked I’ll tell you about. Best wishes for tomorrow in every way - in your exam and all other activities. And I’ll see you on Thursday at 6:30 unless I can do something with you sooner. Goodnight and god bless you. Love - Carl.
