Dr. Carl. D. Duncan (1895-1966), former SJSU professor and chairman of the National Science Department, began his career at San Jose State College in 1922. During his tenure he mentored many students, and between the years 1964-1966, he mentored Patricia Carpio (Whiting), a student in the Humanities & Art. Whiting worked for Dr. Duncan, who served as the secretary of the Field Studies program at that time. Whiting went on to become the first Filipino woman elected to the Oregon State Legislature, serving three terms from 1972-1978, and a community activist and beloved leader. Duncan and Whiting maintained a long-term friendship that lasted until his death in 1966. Patricia Whiting died at age 69 on July 1, 2010 of cancer. She is survived by her husband Vincent Whiting.
I put a “Ramparts” in your mailbox and wrote a letter to them, reminding them that they owe you the magazine. Dear Patricia: It was good that you were able to join our family party last evening. You added a great deal to everyone’s enjoyment, especially that of my two sisters. Annie especially wanted to get acquainted with you, as the two of you had had such a brief introduction at my dinner last May. Tomorrow I’m going up to Joyce and Tom’s in the P.M., planning to be at their place about five o’clock. Then the three of us will go with a group of the younger faculty from Hayward State - mostly former San Jose State students - to a restaurant in San Francisco that is operated by Basques and which, I’m told, serves typical Basque food. We have to be at the restaurant at an appointed time as all serving is done family style - each table being set and provided with a full assortment of food and only those who are on hand when the meal begins are assured of their share. It promises to be a most enjoyable dinner. I’d like to be able to take you also, but I presume your plans are already complete for tomorrow and provide for no changes. However, if my presumption is wrong and you’d like to go, just give me a ring. Once I learn where the place is, though, we can go another time - going to S.F. by train or bus, whichever is convenient. Saturday evening I go to the Ranch to the sendoff party for Lindy before she goes to Europe. I guess that’s all the important news for now. Love as always - Carl.
