Dr. Carl. D. Duncan (1895-1966), former SJSU professor and chairman of the National Science Department, began his career at San Jose State College in 1922. During his tenure he mentored many students, and between the years 1964-1966, he mentored Patricia Carpio (Whiting), a student in the Humanities & Art. Whiting worked for Dr. Duncan, who served as the secretary of the Field Studies program at that time. Whiting went on to become the first Filipino woman elected to the Oregon State Legislature, serving three terms from 1972-1978, and a community activist and beloved leader. Duncan and Whiting maintained a long-term friendship that lasted until his death in 1966. Patricia Whiting died at age 69 on July 1, 2010 of cancer. She is survived by her husband Vincent Whiting.
Dearest Patricia: I went out to the K and W sewing machine center (917 N 13th) and asked if I would still be entitled to the discount ($120) on a Necchi sewing machine. The lady in charge a Mrs. Shepard, said her company couldn’t say but she was pretty sure the [?] Sales Co. who put out the bid I got would grant it in view of my being delayed by the trip to Washington and delay in return due to the airlines strike. She said her chances of getting Wenco to agree would be better if I could bring you out and let you select the model of Necchi that you’d like. She says you can have any sweing machine “head” that appeals to you - on a portable machine. There are six or so Necchi models to choose from. Mrs. Shepard also said the sooner you could make a choice, the better chance she’d have of getting a time extension. Some of this probably is just sales talk but I was in no position to argue the conditions because she could just turn me down flat if she chose. Carl.
