Dr. Carl. D. Duncan (1895-1966), former SJSU professor and chairman of the National Science Department, began his career at San Jose State College in 1922. During his tenure he mentored many students, and between the years 1964-1966, he mentored Patricia Carpio (Whiting), a student in the Humanities & Art. Whiting worked for Dr. Duncan, who served as the secretary of the Field Studies program at that time. Whiting went on to become the first Filipino woman elected to the Oregon State Legislature, serving three terms from 1972-1978, and a community activist and beloved leader. Duncan and Whiting maintained a long-term friendship that lasted until his death in 1966. Patricia Whiting died at age 69 on July 1, 2010 of cancer. She is survived by her husband Vincent Whiting.
Tomorrow I have no commitment. Saturday I go to the ranch for Lindy’s party. Oh. My ring attracted the attention of one young woman teacher from a J.C. in Illinois. She knew it was Zuni. Dearest Patricia: The dinner party at the Basque restaurant was a big success though there were only ten persons, I think. Two of the Hayward people couldn’t come. Tom, Joyce, and Annie were hoping without any basis for encouragement, that you might have been able to join the group. They all have fallen in love with you and look forward to seeing you again somewhere, somehow, some time. Annie repeated her invitation to visit her at Salem if the opportunity ever offers. Also they all were much taken with your mother and commented on her wholesomeness and charm and especially on her sense of humor. I suspect the latter has “saved her life” more than once when she has been under emotional stress. And without it life would have been pretty dismal when problems piled up as they have in the past. The Basque restaurant is on Broadway about a half block below the tunnel on Stockton. The food was very good though all the items were standard dinner items: sliced roast pork, mashed potatoes, etc. One might have to go there two or three times to discover what there is that makes the food distinctively “Basque”. But it was good. Also, darling, I want to tell you how grateful I am to you for the many little ways in which you have helped me of late. The waste basket is most attractive and as you know far better looking than before you covered it. Now it really adds to the beauty of my living room. There have been many compliments on the room and each time I know that what draws the compliments is some feature that you have suggested and helped with. The apartment now is getting to be real homey. A few more spots on the walls can have a little additional adornments but already the place is “made”. So thanks, again. I’m grateful for all the improvements. Charlie, the poodle, was full of energy and anxious to play! I gave him your greeting but his acknowledgement was indistinguishable from the rest of his general joy at having someone who’d play with him. Give me a ring when it’s convenient and keep me posted on how things go with you. it was good to see you on your bike again. - love, as always, Carl.
