Dr. Carl. D. Duncan (1895-1966), former SJSU professor and chairman of the National Science Department, began his career at San Jose State College in 1922. During his tenure he mentored many students, and between the years 1964-1966, he mentored Patricia Carpio (Whiting), a student in the Humanities & Art. Whiting worked for Dr. Duncan, who served as the secretary of the Field Studies program at that time. Whiting went on to become the first Filipino woman elected to the Oregon State Legislature, serving three terms from 1972-1978, and a community activist and beloved leader. Duncan and Whiting maintained a long-term friendship that lasted until his death in 1966. Patricia Whiting died at age 69 on July 1, 2010 of cancer. She is survived by her husband Vincent Whiting.
My dearest Patricia: I beg to report that one carton is cleared and out of the living room and already the place looks better! It will not be long now till I shall be ready to begin Polynesianizing, for now that I’m started I shall keep at the cartons until I have them all cleared out. My talk last night was - as I knew it would be - well received. There were many favorable comments. The occasion was the first on which I’ve talked to so well prepared an audience. I ididn’t have to give them the basic data, for all being biologists in a sense, they already knew the basic problem. I doubt, however, if any of them (somewhat under a hundred persons) knew any of the special problems I presented to them. They paid excellent attention and seemed grateful for data on the nature and the urgency that I presented. About half the group have been practicing microtechnologists for some years. Among these were a few I’ve known for ten years or more plus a lot of “new faces”. Some were U.C. or southern California trained but most were from San Jose. Your records I’ve listened to over and over so that I could learn to recognize Moussorgsky ‘s interpretations of the different themes involved. This too, has been interesting. Tomorrow - “today” when you read this I’ll be taking celery juice to your mom again, so I can take anything else you’d like to send, if there is anything, such as the eggs she wants - in case you have them. You can let me know when I take you to the clinic. I’ll see you at 3:30 and 6:00. And now I’ll wish you good-night and sweet dreams. Love - Carl.
