Genealogical research in the early twentieth century made it possible to trace the Beethoven family line back several generations to Flanders in Belgium. The composer’s direct ancestors as represented in this family tree included some colorful characters. Beethoven’s great-grandfather Michael van Beethoven (1684–1749) developed a trade in luxury goods such as lace and furniture to supplement his income as a master baker. Mounting debts led him to flee his creditors in Mechelen and join his son Ludwig in Bonn, where he settled and eventually died in 1749. Michael’s great-grandfather Aert van Beethoven (ca. 1535–1609) was married twice: his first wife, Josyne van Beethoven (née Vlesselaer, ca. 1540–1595) suffered the fate of being convicted as a witch and was burned at the stake in Brussels. Aert remarried in 1600 and had another son the following year.
